NFMC Festivals in Virginia
The Festivals Program of the National Federation of Music Club (NFMC) provides an opportunity for music students to perform before judges and receive constructive evaluations of their performances. Individual Festivals are held across the country and are open to all members of the NFMC through State Federations organized under the NFMC. The program is designed to stimulate interest in American and international music and encourage participants to strive for high standards of musical achievement. Although it is not a competition, it provides participants an opportunity to perform under pressure, build confidence, and mature musically.
In Virginia, nine festivals are organized and run by the VFMC. Members of local VFMC music clubs are eligible to enter their students in the local festivals. They must first federate them into Junior Clubs and pay the required dues during the fall of the year. (In Virginia, the date for federating a Junior Club is determined by the VFMC; contact the VFMC Treasurer for more information.) Teachers then register their students online for the late-winter or early-spring festivals. Teachers must read the rules as published in the NFMC Festival Bulletin and are responsible for the music selections of their students. Bulletins can be purchased through the NFMC.
The nine Virginia festivals serve approximately 6,000 students across the state. This makes Virginia the third largest participating state in the Federation Festivals. Our students perform in many events, including solo piano, piano ensemble, strings, voice, music theory, and a variety of other instruments.
